Nike scores 76 out of 100 for AI visibility and sits in the Strong band, the lowest headline score among our published audits. On open category questions the engines usually still lead with Nike. The trouble starts the moment a rival is named. Showdown, the dimension that measures how Nike does in a direct comparison, scores 38, more than thirty points below every other category. And in the raw count of who AI names, Nike has already slipped to second, edged by On, the running brand, 32% to 31%.
A brand this famous being passed over is the clearest warning in the set. We ran Nike through a HiBot Pulse audit across the three engines customers use and scored every answer by hand on the ANSWER framework. Here is what is happening.

What AI Still Gets Right About Nike
Nike is not invisible. The engines describe it accurately, score Worth a 92 and Expertise a 96, and still name it in 31% of category answers, nearly level with the leader. On open questions about athletic brands, Nike is usually in the first breath. The brand equity is intact. What has eroded is the thing that converts that equity into a sale.

Where Nike Loses the Customer
In comparison prompts the engines pick against Nike outright. Perplexity names Adidas the better overall brand and recommends it for most use cases. ChatGPT recommends New Balance. A second Perplexity answer gives New Balance the verdict for wide feet, with Nike positioned as secondary. A Showdown of 38 means Nike is in the room for nearly every comparison and almost never the choice. The category-level count tells the same story: On has edged ahead for the first-named slot, dropping Nike to second of five. The ANSWER Deep Dive shows each comparison and the rival that won it.
The Facts AI Gets Wrong About Nike
Fabrications are capping answers where Nike is already the recommendation. The Claims AI States as Fact log flagged five model errors. ChatGPT invented product pricing in a recommendation. Google asserted an unverified 34% market-share figure and invented an endorsement number. ChatGPT also fabricated a sponsorship claim, adding "18 Alabama athletes" to a roster in September 2026, and a bogus promo code was circulating in third-party discount sources. Each sits on an answer that otherwise favored Nike.

Why This Happens
The citation rate is 9%, among the lowest we measured. Almost nothing the engines say about Nike traces to a source Nike controls. The Citations and Sources Log shows the models leaning on third-party retail and review sites, which is exactly where a rival's comparison framing and an invented stat come from. When the engines cannot read Nike's own performance and sponsorship facts, they borrow someone else's, and increasingly they borrow a competitor's verdict.
What We Would Fix First
The report ranks the moves on the 90-day roadmap. For Nike, three fixes matter most. First, substantiate the performance and racing leadership claims Nike.com already makes, so the comparison stops defaulting to Adidas and On. Second, correct the fabricated sponsorship roster and endorsement figures with a published athlete-partnerships fact base. Third, kill the incorrect promo code circulating in third-party sources before it becomes the cited answer.
What This Means for Your Brand
Nike is the alarm in the set. If one of the most recognized brands on earth can slip to second in its own category and lose nearly every head-to-head inside AI answers, brand strength alone is clearly no longer enough. The recommendation is being decided by what the engines can cite, and Nike has not given them enough. Methodology and Independence
This audit is an independent HiBot Pulse report run by hand by a human AI specialist across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google, scored on the ANSWER methodology. It is not endorsed by or affiliated with Nike. When an engine invents a figure or a claim, we report it as the engine's output, not as a statement by the brand, and keep the net story fair.
