Not long ago, a customer with a problem opened Google, scanned a page of blue links, and made up their own mind. Today, a fast-growing share of them open ChatGPT instead. They don't ask for links. They ask for an answer.
The scale is hard to overstate. ChatGPT now reaches more than 800 million people a week, close to 1 in 10 adults on the planet.¹ In an early-2025 survey, 58% of consumers said they had already replaced traditional search engines with generative AI for product and service recommendations.² Gartner expects traditional search volume to fall 25% by 2026 as the shift accelerates.³ And nearly 60% of Americans already use generative AI tools to shop, with 1 in 4 saying they trust ChatGPT over Google for product research.⁴ This is not a trend on the horizon. It is already how a large share of your customers decide.
One Answer Is Now the Whole Shortlist
Here is what that means for your brand. When a prospective customer asks an AI engine which product to choose, the engine replies in a sentence or two. It names a few options, recommends one, weighs it against rivals, and passes judgment on price and trust. That reply is the new shortlist, and most of the brands on it never learn they were in the running.
In other words, the entire customer decision journey, and every touchpoint that once made it up, has collapsed into a single touchpoint: AI. We call this the customer journey singularity. The consideration set, the active comparison, the pricing reality check, and the trust assessment that once played out across search results, review sites, and word of mouth now happen inside one conversation, mediated by one intermediary, in a sentence the customer reads and acts on.
Why the Shift Stays Invisible
Three things keep the singularity hidden. AI answers are personalized, so each customer sees something slightly different and there is no single result to check. They are conversational, so the customer probes, compares, and decides in private. And they leave no trace in your analytics. A customer who asks ChatGPT, gets a recommendation, and never visits your site appears nowhere in your funnel. You can lose the sale before you knew there was one.
There is also a trap in checking it yourself. Ask ChatGPT about your own brand while logged in and it draws on your history, telling you a flattering story no neutral customer would ever get. The view that matters is the one a stranger sees, and that is precisely the view you cannot casually access.
The Question Almost No Brand Can Answer
You can measure your search rank, your ad spend, and your review stars. Can you say what ChatGPT tells a customer about you right now? For almost every brand, the answer is no. That blind spot is the problem, and the first step to fixing it is not optimization. It is measurement. You cannot manage what you cannot see.
Making AI surface, recommend, and represent you correctly is the emerging discipline of answer engine optimization (AEO), also called generative engine optimization (GEO). This is what the ANSWER framework from HiBot was built to measure. ANSWER breaks AI visibility into 6 measurable categories (Appearance, Nomination, Showdown, Worth, Expertise, and Reputation), each tied to a real moment in how customers decide, from whether AI names you at all to whether it says you can be trusted. Together they turn a vague anxiety about "how are we doing in AI?" into a score, a baseline, and a prioritized list of what to fix.
AI has become the front door to your brand. Your customers are already walking through it. The only question is whether you can see what they find on the other side.
Want to know exactly what AI answer engines say about your brand? A HiBot audit gives you a neutral baseline across all 6 categories of the ANSWER framework, plus a plan for what to fix first. Download the ANSWER whitepaper to see the full framework, or request an AI visibility audit at hibot.com.
