Appearance is the first category in HiBot's ANSWER framework, and it measures the most basic question in AI visibility: when a customer asks AI about your category, does your brand get named at all? More precisely, Appearance is whether an AI answer engine surfaces your brand on its own when someone asks an open, category-level question, without typing your name. It is your presence in the consideration set, before any comparison begins.
This is the foundational category, for a simple reason. When a customer asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI answers which product to choose, the engine replies with a short list, recommends one, and moves on. That reply is the new shortlist, and most of the brands left off it never learn they were in the running. If you do not appear, nothing else in the framework gets a chance. You are never recommended, compared, priced, or trusted, because you were never in the room.
The Customer Question behind It
Appearance answers the customer's opening question: "Who should I be looking at?" It is the AI equivalent of making someone's mental short list at the very start of a search, except the list is now assembled by an engine in a sentence or two.
In McKinsey's Consumer Decision Journey, this is the initial consideration set, the small group of brands a customer starts with when a need is triggered. McKinsey found that brands in the initial consideration set are far more likely to be chosen. AI has not changed that truth. It has just become the thing that decides who gets into the set.
What the Engine Is Actually Asked
Appearance is measured with open, category-level prompts that never mention your brand. For example:
- "What are the best project management tools for agencies?"
- "Who are the leading industrial robotics companies in the United States?"
- "Top accounting software for small businesses in 2026."
The test is simple. Across questions like these, does the engine name you, how often, and how near the top?
Strong vs. Weak Appearance
Strong Appearance looks like being named, often near the top, across most category queries and across more than one engine. Weak Appearance looks like being absent while competitors are named as the leaders. The dangerous part is that weakness here is invisible from the inside. The customer simply never sees you, and because they never click through, you never see them either. Nothing in your analytics records the brands an engine chose to leave out.
How Appearance Is Scored
Within an audit, each answer is scored from 0 to 4 on how prominently your brand appears, from named first down to absent while rivals are present. Those scores roll up into an Appearance score from 0 to 100. Appearance also carries the heaviest weight in the overall HiBot Score, at 0.25, because presence gates every other category. A brand that is invisible here cannot make up the ground anywhere else.

Why It Comes First
Read the ANSWER framework top to bottom and Appearance is the gate into the entire journey. It is worth measuring before anything else, because it sets the ceiling on everything that follows. You can have an accurate value story and a spotless reputation, but if the engine never brings you up when a customer asks who the options are, none of it ever reaches the customer.
The first step is to find out whether you appear at all, across the engines and the markets that matter to you, the way a neutral customer would see it.
